Lesson : Diva Sayuri Ishikawa Looking Forward to Concert in Osaka

"Oh, I was so anxious to meet you."  In January 2021, singer Sayuri Ishikawa will perform at the Festival Hall in Kita-ku, Osaka. Originally scheduled for June 2020, the performance was postponed due to the coronavirus. Forty seven years since her debut, Ishikawa is a diva who represents the Japanese "Kayou" song world. Fans are waiting eagerly to see her perform again.

In September, a concert was held at the Yatsugatake Kogen Ongakudo in Nagano Prefecture for the first time in about 7 months. "I've been singing since I was a kid, but it's the first time I've been so happy to sing," she recalls.

Because of the coronavirus, performances have been canceled or postponed one after another since March. "I really want to perform songs and music. Let's do what we can do now".  She started a free YouTube distribution in May. Ishikawa said that she also experienced recording without a live audience on TV, but she felt frustrated because she couldn't feel the enthusiasm that an audience exudes. I truly thought, "live performances are the best" after all.

In March, her 126th single "I want to be happy" (Teichiku) was released. Ishikawa explained that she wrote the lyrics in plain language, hoping to free people from the closed feeling that has permeated society.  It became a song that was close to the hearts of the people with the coronavirus.

The album "JAPAN" that was released in June is a soulful work that contains 50 songs with "singing Japanese traditions" as its theme. This album is a compilation of children's songs from "Warashi" (1988), folk songs from "Tami" (2019), and small songs and anthologies from "Iki" (2020).  "Despite hard work and tough times, Japanese people have always laughed and sang through it all. I hope I can still do that," she says, thinking of the album.

Ishikawa will participate in the NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen this year as well. In her 43rd appearance, she was ranked 1st in the history of the Red Group and 4th including the White Group. Even now that she has become a renowned nationally known singer, she continues to take on new challenges. She co-starred with guitarist Tomoyasu Hotei, singer Ringo Sheena, and rapper KREVA, and performs in the taiga drama "Kirin ga Kuru".  She aggressively and easily transcends genres, and continues to show a new side of herself.

When asked about her feelings toward the 50th anniversary of her debut, she said after a little thought, "I would like to continue to search for and perform music that I like and think is cool. I want to be able to say that I am always having fun. Somehow I don't want to settle down just yet."
