In American football, a field goal is an attempt to kick the ball between the goal posts. The ball must be kicked off the ground, and normally is held by a player called the "holder." Normally the field goal is attempted on fourth down, but there is no restriction in the rulebook limiting which down a field goal can be attempted. A successful field goal gains three points for the kicking team.
