gland
  (せん)

(1) Noun :

A gland is an organ which produces and releases substances that perform a specific function in the body. There are two types of gland. Endocrine glands are ductless glands and release the substances that they make (hormones) directly into the bloodstream. The major glands of the endocrine system include the pineal gland, pituitary gland, pancreas, ovaries, testes, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, hypothalamus and adrenal glands.

Exocrine glands secrete substances onto an epithelial surface by way of a duct. Examples of exocrine glands include sweat, salivary, mammary, lacrimal, sebaceous, prostate and mucous.
