In American football, a fumble is when a player carrying the ball drops the ball to the ground. Either an offensive player or a defensive player can recover a fumble. If a fumble rolls out of bounds, it is considered to be in possession of the person who initially fumbled the ball. The word fumble is also a verb; to fumble the ball.
