In American football, the game begins with a kickoff, which involves the kicking team kicking the ball to the receiving team. Before the game starts, a determination of which team will kick off is done by coin flip. The winner of the coin flip will decide to kick off to start the game, or defer kicking off until after the halftime intermission (i.e., at the start of the second half of the game).
In addition, after each score, the scoring team will kick the ball off to the other team.
