The Sights, Sounds, Smells, and Tastes of Japan

Here are the chronicles of my adventures in Japan.  Living in western Tokyo, I've had the opportunity to visit all the major tourist hotspots, and some places off the beaten track.  The latter category is normally saved for a person's second or third trip to Japan, but if you want to spice your first trip up a bit, you can try one of these.

The Wanderers

Follow the travels and travails of the wanderers as they travel here and there, and check out new and interesting sights and restaurants.

News and Views

Interesting news items from around the world, and some of my views about the world we live in, culture, society, life, or frankly anything that will stimulate discussion.

Europe is Wonderful After All These Years

This set of lessons describes our trips to Europe in the spring of 2023 and the spring of 2024. They were very different trips, though some of the same countries were visited - just different parts. The first trip encompassed Vienna, Rome, and Florence. The second trip - with me driving - included Zurich, Lucerne, Como, Milan, Bolzano, Innsbruck, and separately, Prague. I wonder if we will return to Europe again for a third trip...

John and Marie Part 1

This curriculum includes lessons, vocabulary and quizzes that focus on the lives of John and Marie, a typical couple navigating life together. We begin the story before John and Marie met, going back in time to the 1990's. From there we will follow their journey through their early working years, how they met, their relationship, and well, we shall see where the story leads!

There will be many idioms included in the lessons that are used very commonly by native English speakers. Knowledge of idioms should be a priority for advanced English learners.

Personal Computers

This curriculum provides a high level review of the hardware, software, and network components of a personal computer.

Key Technologies of the Past and Future

This curriculum is intended to focus on anything that is technical, past and future. Originally I was thinking of just having a Virtual Reality curriculum, but decided to broaden it because of all that is going on in AI and robotics.  Let's see where this takes us!

Dr. John Tanaka, MD

This curriculum of lessons will focus on healthcare in many different facets.  Follow Dr. Tanaka as he works his wonders, providing the best care for his patients.

Please note - these lessons should not to be used for the diagnosis or treatment any any real illness.  They are intended to get you familiar with common ailments and their English descriptions.  If you are ill, consult a real doctor or website that specializes in medical information instead of this website.  Thank you for your attention!

Driving a Tour Bus Through the Alaskan Winderness

Published: 2025-09-21

Introducing David Rehmeyer, an old friend of mine from our time at Shared Medical Systems, both in Malvern Pennsylvania and Tokyo Japan. To me, David is a modern day Sal Paradise from Kerouac’s novel On The Road. His adventures are legendary, from Pennsylvania to Japan to New Zealand, Texas and Alaska, and many points in between. He’s done numerous long distance bicycle trips, and has avidly documented his treks in his own online journal.

I asked David if he would be interested in giving us a feel of what it is like to work in Alaska as a tour bus driver, his current gig, and he happily accepted.  He’s included a number of pictures depicting the beauty of the area around Fairbanks. Enjoy!

John Meets His Team

Alicia had set up a meeting with the Enterprise Engineering Services team to introduce John as their new manager for 10am in the Enterprise conference room. Diane will chair the meeting.

John's interview is over, and it went well. Will he get the job? Diane informs John of her decision. Hint - it's good news!

John has an interview today for the management position that Elaine is leaving. He thinks he is very prepared for whatever question comes up. WIll he nail it?

When Opportunity Knocks

Engaging Yokohama, The City of Harbor Lights

Yokohama's history, compared to other cities in Japan, is rather recent. It was one of the ports opened in 1877, and since has expanded to become Japan's second largest city. In this lesson we'll explore some of the history of Yokohama, and some places in the city worth a visit.

A Lunch Trek Into The Mountains West of Tokyo

Did you ever want to just get away from it all? And have a nice lunch in the bargain? Well, I may have the place for you.

Kamakura, The Kyoto of Eastern Japan

Kamakura is often referred to as the Kyoto of Eastern Japan, and for good reason. Its historic temples are stunning examples of architecture introduced from Song Dynasty China with Zen Buddhism's influence. Kamakura was once the administrative capital of Japan. And so it has the history, sure, but that is not all it has to offer. I've visited Kamakura numerous times over the years, so it was about time I wrote something about this interesting city south of Tokyo.

The Grundy House: A lovely example of the Queen Anne Architectural Style

The Bristol, Pennsylvania historic district has a variety of archetectural styles and historic buildings, many of which are in private hands and are therefore not open for public viewing. But thanks to the Grundy family, a beautifully preserved house in Bristol is open for tours, and this Victorian gem is a must see.  Have a look...

A Night at the Opera, in Sapporo

My wife's cousin Jun composed the music for an opera, and we were invited to attend - in Sapporo! A blend of Japanese history and original music greeted us with this new opera. And while we were in Sapporo, we took a quick tour of the city.

Old Town Kawagoe Is A Great Day Trip Destination

Kawagoe is an historic Japanese city in Saitama Prefecture, nicknamed "Little Edo" for its well-preserved Edo-period buildings, featuring Kurazukuri warehouses, old merchant streets, and ancient temples. It's an easy day trip from Tokyo that allows you to experience some of old Edo Japan. We recently went once for lunch, and then I did a solo encore to check it out some more.

Kawagoe Lunch Spots

If you're visiting Kawagoe you'll probably want to stop somewhere for lunch. Here are a couple of restaurants that I have tried recently that might work for you. One is a traditional Japanese sushi restaurant, and the other is a burger joint. Yes, quite a contrast! Bon appétit.

The Fall Foliage of Tateshina, Nagano and the Majestic Matsumoto Castle

If you're in Japan during the fall months, it's always a nice idea to plan an outing outside Tokyo to see the fall colors. We made a plan to do just that, and tacked on a trip to Matsumoto to see the famous castle. Well, plans change when life gets in the way, but in our case not so much!

My Glorious Migration to Costa Rica

Introducing Greg Thomas, an old friend of mine from our time at Kaiser Permanente. He was working out of rosy Pasadena, while I was in various locations in the Bay Area. Greg retired a little earlier than I did, and did what some only talk about. Moving out of the US is not a trivial decision, but Greg took the plunge and did it, and most importantly, is happy he did.

As with David and Jeremy previously, I asked Greg if he would be interested in telling his story about how he decided to move to Costa Rica, and what is it like living there.  He’s included a some interesting and beautiful images of life in the small town he lives in. Enjoy!  --Charlie

A Day Trip to Mount Takao in Western Tokyo Is a Breath of Fresh Air

Mt. Takao is another place off the beaten path that you can visit while you are in the Tokyo area. It has its share of visitors but is still not a hotbed of tourism, at least not yet. It's a nice alternative to the crowds at Hakone.
