説明
"Beside" means "next to" or "at the side of." In "The lamp is beside the sofa," "The lamp" is the thing we talk about, "is" links it, and "beside the sofa" tells the place. "Besides" means "in addition to" or "apart from."
In "Besides my homework, I have to call my grandmother," "besides my homework" adds one more thing to do. Japanese often uses "〜のそばに" for "beside" and "〜に加えて" or "ほかに" for "besides," so the English word changes with the meaning. Do not use "besides" for physical location.
「beside」は「〜のそばに」「〜の横に」という意味です。例えば "The lamp is beside the sofa." では、"The lamp" が話しているもの、"is" がつなぎの動詞、そして "beside the sofa" が場所を表しています。"besides" は「〜に加えて」「〜のほかに」という意味です。
"Besides my homework, I have to call my grandmother." では、"besides my homework" が「宿題に加えて、もう1つ用事がある」と足し算のように情報を追加しています。日本語では「〜のそばに」と「〜に加えて」が別なので、英語でも意味に合わせて "beside" と "besides" を分けて使います。場所を言うときに "besides" は使いません。

よくある間違い
Japanese learners often use "besides" for location, as in "My bag is besides me." This is wrong. Use "beside" for place: "My bag is beside me." Use "besides" only for "in addition to" or "apart from."
日本人学習者は、場所を言うときに "besides" を使ってしまいがちです。たとえば "My bag is besides me." は誤りです。場所なら "beside" を使って "My bag is beside me." と言います。"besides" は「〜に加えて」「〜を除いて」の意味だけで使います。
