Explanation
Use "one" for a singular countable noun, and "ones" for a plural countable noun. You use them when the noun is clear from the context, so you do not repeat it.
For example, "I want the blue one." Here "the" shows a specific item, "blue" describes it, and "one" replaces a noun like "shirt" or "bag." In Japanese, you often do not repeat the noun, so this pattern can feel new in English. Remember that "one" and "ones" are for countable things, not for uncountable nouns like "water" or "rice."
"one" は単数の可算名詞を、"ones" は複数の可算名詞を置き換えます。名詞が文脈で分かるときに使い、同じ名詞をくり返しません。
例えば "I want the blue one." では、"the" が特定の1つを示し、"blue" がその特徴を言い、"one" が "shirt" や "bag" のような名詞の代わりになります。日本語では名詞をくり返さないことが多いので、英語でこの形を入れるのが新しく感じられます。"one" と "ones" は数えられるものに使い、"water" や "rice" のような数えられない名詞には使いません。
Examples
- I want the blue one. 青いほうがほしいです。
- This one is cheaper. こちらのほうが安いです。
- Do you like these ones? これらは気に入っていますか。
- I don't want the big ones. 大きいほうはほしくありません。
- We need a new one for the kitchen. 台所に新しいものが1つ必要です。
- Those shoes are nice, but I prefer the black ones. あの靴もいいですが、黒いほうが好きです。
Common Mistakes
Japanese learners often leave out "one" after an adjective, for example "I want the blue." -> "I want the blue one." Another common mistake is number mismatch, such as "these one" -> "these ones" or "this ones" -> "this one." Also, do not use "one/ones" with uncountable nouns: "I need a water one" -> "I need some water."
日本語の感覚で形容詞のあとに "one" を入れ忘れることがよくあります。例: "I want the blue." → "I want the blue one." また、数の一致も大事で、"these one" は "these ones"、"this ones" は "this one" になります。さらに、"one/ones" は数えられる名詞だけなので、"I need a water one" ではなく "I need some water." のように言います。
