Using "and" for Addition

A1 Eiken 3 Beginner

word/phrase/clause + "and" + word/phrase/clause

Explanation

Use "and" to add one thing to another. It can join two words, two phrases, or two short actions.

In "We went to the shop and bought milk," "We" is the subject, "went to the shop" is the first action, and "and" links it to "bought milk." English often uses "and" where Japanese uses "〜て" or "〜と". Use "and" in lists too, as in "apples, oranges, and bananas."

Examples

  • I like tea and coffee. 私はお茶とコーヒーが好きです。
  • My brother and sister live in Tokyo. 私の兄と妹は東京に住んでいます。
  • She is kind and funny. 彼女は親切で面白いです。
  • We went to the shop and bought milk. 私たちは店に行って牛乳を買いました。
  • Do you want tea and cake? 紅茶とケーキはいかがですか。
  • I don't want tea and coffee now. 今はお茶もコーヒーもほしくありません。

Common Mistakes

Japanese learners often leave out "and" when they join two things or two actions.

Wrong: "I like tea coffee."

Right: "I like tea and coffee."

Wrong: "We went home bought dinner."

Right: "We went home and bought dinner."
