Explanation
Use a possessive adjective before a noun to show who something belongs to. The common words are "my, your, his, her, its, our, their."
For example, "Our office is near the station." Here "our" shows the office belongs to us, and "office" is the noun. "Near the station" gives the place. In Japanese, you say "私たちのオフィス," but English puts the possessive word before the noun. Do not use "mine" before a noun.
名詞の前に所有形容詞を置いて、「だれのものか」を表します。よく使う形は "my, your, his, her, its, our, their" です。例えば "Our office is near the station." では、"our" が「私たちの」を表し、"office" が名詞です。"near the station" は場所を説明しています。日本語では「私たちのオフィス」と「の」を使いますが、英語では所有を表す語を名詞の前に置きます。名詞の前に "mine" は使いません。
Examples
- This is my bag. これは私のかばんです。
- Is that your phone? あれはあなたのスマホですか。
- His bike is blue. 彼の自転車は青いです。
- Her coffee is cold. 彼女のコーヒーは冷めています。
- Our office is near the station. 私たちのオフィスは駅の近くです。
- Their house is not big. 彼らの家は大きくありません。
Common Mistakes
Japanese learners often use "mine" before a noun or use "it's" for possession.
Wrong: "This is mine bag."
Right: "This is my bag."
Wrong: "It's tail is short."
Right: "Its tail is short."
Use a possessive adjective before the noun.
日本語では「私のかばん」のように言うので、英語でも "mine" を名詞の前に置いてしまうことがあります。× "This is mine bag." → ○ "This is my bag." また、"it's" は "it is" で、所有の "its" とは別です。"its tail" のように、所有を表すときは "its" を使います。
