Present Continuous Tense

A2 Eiken Pre-2 Elementary

am/is/are + verb-ing

Explanation

Use the present continuous for an action happening now, or around now. Make it with "am", "is", or "are" + the verb + "-ing".

For example, "She is studying English this morning." Here, "is" shows the subject is "She", and "studying" shows the action is in progress. "English" is the object, and "this morning" tells us the time is near now.

Japanese often uses "〜ている", but English also needs the be verb. You can also use this form for a planned future meeting, like "We are meeting Tom at 3 p.m."

Examples

  • I am cooking dinner now. 私は今、夕食を作っています。
  • She is studying English this morning. 彼女は今朝、英語を勉強しています。
  • Are you waiting for the bus? バスを待っていますか。
  • They are not watching TV. 彼らはテレビを見ていません。
  • We are meeting Tom at 3 p.m. 私たちは午後3時にトムに会う予定です。
  • Look! The children are playing in the garden. 見て! 子どもたちが庭で遊んでいます。

Common Mistakes

Japanese learners often forget the be verb and say "I playing tennis now." or use the base verb, like "She is study English." The correct forms are "I am playing tennis now." and "She is studying English." Remember: present continuous needs "am/is/are" + "-ing".
