Using "should" for Advice

A2 Eiken Pre-2 Elementary

should + base verb

Explanation

Use "should" to give advice or say what is a good idea. It is softer than "must".

For example, "You should see a doctor." Here, "You" is the person who gets the advice. "should" shows the advice, and "see" is the base verb, so we do not say "to see" or "sees". In Japanese, we often say "〜したほうがいい". English shows this idea with the modal verb "should".

Examples

  • You should drink more water. もっと水を飲んだほうがいいです。
  • She should rest today. 彼女は今日は休んだほうがいいです。
  • Should I call you later? あとで電話したほうがいいですか。
  • We shouldn't stay up late. 夜更かししないほうがいいです。
  • You should see a doctor if the pain gets worse. 痛みがひどくなるなら、病院に行ったほうがいいです。
  • He should ask his teacher for help before the test. 試験の前に、彼は先生に助けを求めたほうがいいです。

Common Mistakes

Japanese learners often add "to" after "should" or put "-s" on the main verb.

Wrong: "You should to see a doctor." or "She should goes home."

Right: "You should see a doctor." and "She should go home."

After "should", always use the base verb.
