Verbs Followed by Gerunds or Infinitives

A2 Eiken Pre-2 Elementary

verb + to-infinitive / verb + -ing

Explanation

Use "to + verb" after verbs like "want", "decide", and "plan". Use "-ing" after verbs like "enjoy", "mind", and "finish".

In "She wants to learn English.", "She" is the subject. "Wants" is the main verb, and "to learn" is the next action. "English" is the thing she wants to learn. Japanese often says "英語を学びたい" or "英語を学ぶことにした", but English must choose the right form after the verb.

Examples

  • I enjoy cooking at home. 私は家で料理するのが好きです。
  • She wants to learn English. 彼女は英語を学びたいです。
  • We decided to stay longer. 私たちはもう少し長く滞在することにしました。
  • Do you mind waiting here? ここで待つのはかまいませんか。
  • He stopped smoking last year. 彼は去年たばこをやめました。
  • I don't plan to drive today. 今日は運転する予定はありません。

Common Mistakes

Japanese learners often say "I enjoy to cook." The right form is "I enjoy cooking." After "enjoy", use the -ing form, not "to + verb".
