説明
A modal verb is a helper word like "can". Use it at the front to make a yes-no question.
In "Can you help me?", "Can" is the modal verb, "you" is the subject, and "help" is the base verb. There is no "do" in this question, and the main verb does not change to "helps" or "to help". In Japanese, you often say "〜できますか" or "〜してくれますか", but English shows the question with word order.
助動詞は "can" のような、動詞を助ける言葉です。文の先頭に置くと、Yes/No 疑問文を作れます。
"Can you help me?" では、"Can" が助動詞、"you" が主語、"help" が動詞の原形です。この文では "do" は使いませんし、動詞も "helps" や "to help" にはしません。日本語では「〜できますか」「〜してくれますか」のように言いますが、英語では語順で疑問文を作ります。
例文
- Can you swim? 泳げますか。
- Can I sit here? ここに座ってもいいですか。
- Can she play the piano? 彼女はピアノを弾けますか。
- Can we meet at six? 6時に会えますか。
- Can't you hear me? 私の声が聞こえないのですか。
- Can you tell me if the shop is open? その店が開いているか教えてもらえますか。
よくある間違い
Japanese learners often add "do" in modal questions: "Do you can speak English?" -> "Can you speak English?" They may also add "to": "Can you to help me?" -> "Can you help me?" After a modal verb, use the base verb only.
日本語話者は、助動詞の疑問文でも "do" を足してしまいがちです。たとえば "Do you can speak English?" ではなく、正しくは "Can you speak English?" です。また "Can you to help me?" のように "to" を入れることもありますが、助動詞の後ろは動詞の原形だけを使います。
