説明
Some phrasal verbs can be split. With a noun object, you can often put the particle after the noun.
For example, "Please turn the light off." Here, "turn off" is the phrasal verb, "the light" is the noun object, and "off" is the particle.
If the object is a pronoun, the pronoun must come before the particle: "Please turn it off." Japanese often puts the object before the verb, so "turn off it" feels possible, but it is wrong in English.
句動詞の中には、動詞と小さい語「particle」を分けられるものがあります。名詞の目的語なら、particle を後ろに回せます。たとえば "Please turn the light off." では、"turn off" が句動詞、"the light" が名詞の目的語、"off" が particle です。
目的語が代名詞なら、代名詞は particle の前に置きます。つまり "Please turn it off." が正しい形です。日本語は目的語を動詞の前に置くので、"turn off it" のように考えてしまいやすいですが、英語では間違いです。
例文
- I looked up the word. 私はその単語を調べました。
- I looked the word up. 私はその単語を調べました。
- I looked it up. 私はそれを調べました。
- Can you turn down the music? 音を小さくしてくれますか。
- Can you turn the music down? 音を小さくしてくれますか。
- Turn it down. まだ音を下げないでください。
- Turn the TV off. テレビを消してください。
- Turn off the TV. テレビを消してください。
よくある間違い
Japanese learners often say "turn off it," "look up it," or "put on it." In English, a pronoun object must come before the particle, so say "turn it off," "look it up," and "put it on." With a noun object, both "turn off the light" and "turn the light off" are natural.
日本人学習者は "turn off it"、"look up it"、"put on it" のように言いがちです。英語では、代名詞の目的語は particle の前に置くので、正しくは "turn it off"、"look it up"、"put it on" です。名詞の目的語なら "turn off the light" も "turn the light off" も自然です。
