Present Continuous for Temporary Situations

A2 Eiken Pre-2 Elementary

am/is/are + verb-ing

Explanation

Use the present continuous for a situation that is only temporary. The pattern is "am/is/are + verb-ing."

Look at "I'm staying with my aunt this week." "I'm" is the be verb, and "staying" is the action form. "This week" shows that the situation is only for a short time. In Japanese, you can often say "〜ている" for both short-term and long-term situations, but English shows the short-time meaning with the present continuous.

Examples

  • I'm staying with my aunt this week. 今週は叔母の家に泊まっています。
  • She is working from home this month. 彼女は今月は在宅勤務です。
  • Are you using this laptop today? 今日はこのノートパソコンを使っていますか。
  • We aren't living here permanently. 私たちはここにずっと住んでいるわけではありません。
  • My brother is studying in Tokyo for six months. 弟は6か月間、東京で勉強しています。
  • The shop is closing early this week. その店は今週は早く閉まります。

Common Mistakes

Wrong: "I live with my sister this week."

Right: "I'm living with my sister this week."

Japanese learners often use the present simple for a temporary situation, because Japanese can say "今週は姉と住んでいます" without changing the verb form. In English, use the present continuous for something that is only true for a short time.
