Past Simple Tense

A2 Eiken Pre-2 Elementary

subject + past simple verb

Explanation

Use the past simple to talk about a finished action in the past. The verb changes to show past time.

For example, "I visited my grandmother yesterday." Here "I" is the subject, "visited" is the past verb, and "yesterday" tells us when it happened. The action is complete, so it is not happening now. In Japanese, you often add "〜た" and a time word, but English shows the past in the verb itself.

Examples

  • I watched TV last night. 私は昨夜テレビを見ました。
  • She went to the store yesterday. 彼女は昨日、店へ行きました。
  • Did you finish your homework? 宿題は終わりましたか。
  • We didn't eat breakfast this morning. 私たちは今朝、朝ごはんを食べませんでした。
  • He played soccer after school. 彼は放課後にサッカーをしました。
  • They lived in Osaka when they were children. 彼らは子どものころ大阪に住んでいました。

Common Mistakes

Japanese learners often keep the verb in the present form with a past time word, like "I go to Kyoto yesterday." It should be "I went to Kyoto yesterday." Another common mistake is saying "Did you went?" after "did." Use the base verb: "Did you go?"
