Explanation
Use "get + past participle" for an informal passive. It is common in speech and casual writing. It often means that something happens to the subject, sometimes by surprise or bad luck.
In "I got locked out of my apartment," "I" is the person affected, and "got locked" means someone or something caused the problem. "Out of my apartment" tells where I could not go. In Japanese, this often sounds like "家に入れなくなった," not a word-for-word passive.
"get + 過去分詞" は、くだけた受け身です。会話やカジュアルな文章でよく使います。多くの場合、主語が何かの影響を受けたことを表し、予想外や困った結果になることが多いです。
例えば "I got locked out of my apartment." では、"I" が影響を受けた人で、"got locked" が「締め出された」ことを表します。"out of my apartment" は「アパートの中に入れなかった」という意味です。日本語では、直訳の受け身より「家に入れなくなった」と言うほうが自然です。
Examples
- I got locked out of my apartment. 私はアパートに締め出されました。
- She got promoted last month. 彼女は先月昇進しました。
- Did you get invited to the wedding? 結婚式に招待された?
- We didn't get told about the change. 私たちはその変更について知らされませんでした。
- My bike gets fixed at this shop every spring. 私の自転車は毎年春にこの店で直してもらいます。
- If you leave your bag here, it might get stolen. ここにかばんを置くと、盗まれるかもしれません。
Common Mistakes
Japanese learners often add "be" and say "I was got invited to the party." The correct form is "I got invited to the party." For this structure, use "get + past participle," not "was got."
日本語では「招待された」のように受け身を考えるので、"I was got invited to the party." のように "be" を足してしまうことがあります。正しくは "I got invited to the party." です。"get + 過去分詞" を使い、"was got" にはしません。
