Explanation
Phrasal verbs are verbs plus a small word like "on", "off", "up", or "out". The small word changes the meaning.
For example, "Please turn the light on." Here "turn" is the main verb, "on" changes the meaning to "start working", and "the light" is the object. In Japanese, you often use one verb like "つける", but English often uses two words. If the object is a pronoun, say "turn it on", not "turn on it".
句動詞は、動詞に "on" や "off"、"up"、"out" などの小さな語がついた表現です。その小さな語が、全体の意味を変えます。
例えば、"Please turn the light on." では、"turn" が中心の動詞で、"on" が「つける」という意味を作り、"the light" が目的語です。日本語では「つける」のように1語で言うことが多いですが、英語では2語で表すことがよくあります。目的語が代名詞のときは、"turn it on" のように動詞と小さな語の間に入れます。
Examples
- Please turn on the light. 明かりをつけてください。
- I get up at 7:00 every day. 私は毎日7時に起きます。
- She picked up the keys from the table. 彼女はテーブルの上から鍵を拾い上げました。
- I'm cold, can you turn the heat up? 寒いです。暖房を強くしてもらえませんか?
- We do not give up easily. 私たちは簡単にはあきらめません。
- Can you find out the train time for me? 電車の時間を調べてくれる?
Common Mistakes
Japanese learners often put a pronoun after the particle, like "I turned off it." In English, the pronoun goes in the middle: "I turned it off." This word order is important with phrasal verbs.
日本人学習者は、代名詞を後ろに置いてしまいがちです。たとえば "I turned off it." は不自然で、正しくは "I turned it off." です。代名詞は、動詞と小さな語の間に入れます。
