Possessive Nouns

A1 Eiken 3 Beginner

noun + 's / s'

Explanation

Use a possessive noun to show who something belongs to. Add "'s" after a name or noun.

For example, in "This is Anna's book," "Anna's" shows the owner, and "book" is the thing Anna has. In Japanese, you usually say "Anna no hon," but English puts the owner first and adds "'s". If the noun is plural and already ends in "s", write only the apostrophe: "the girls' room".

Examples

  • This is Tom's car. これはトムの車です。
  • Sara's bag is on the table. サラのバッグはテーブルの上にあります。
  • Is this your mother's phone? これはあなたのお母さんの電話ですか。
  • Where is Ken's notebook? ケンのノートはどこですか。
  • That isn't my sister's room. あれは私の妹の部屋ではありません。
  • The girls' shoes are under the bed. 女の子たちの靴はベッドの下にあります。
  • The color of the players' uniforms is really strange! 選手たちのユニフォームの色は本当に奇妙だ!

Common Mistakes

Japanese learners often write "Ken book" or "book of Ken". The correct form is "Ken's book". For plural owners, do not add "s" again: "the girls' room," not "the girls's room".
