Regular Plural Nouns

A1 Eiken 3 Beginner

singular noun + -s / -es

Explanation

Use the plural form when there is more than one thing. Most regular nouns add "-s". Some nouns add "-es", like "boxes" and "watches".

In "I have two cats.", "I" is the subject, "have" is the verb, "two" shows the number, and "cats" is the plural noun. Japanese often does not change the noun for singular or plural, so English needs the ending to show the number.

Examples

  • I have two cats. 私は猫を2匹飼っています。
  • She bought three apples. 彼女はりんごを3つ買いました。
  • We need some chairs. いくつかいすが必要です。
  • There are four boxes on the table. テーブルの上に箱が4つあります。
  • Do you have any questions? 質問はありますか。
  • I do not like big spiders. 私は大きなクモは好きではありません。

Common Mistakes

Japanese learners often forget the plural ending after numbers, and say "I have three apple." The correct form is "I have three apples." Also, after nouns like "box" and "watch", use "-es": "two boxes", "three watches".
