Using "may" for Permission

A2 Eiken Pre-2 Elementary

may + base verb

Explanation

"May" is used to ask for permission or give permission. It is often more polite and formal than "can".

For example, in "May I open the window?", "May" comes before "I" to make a question, and "open the window" is the action. The whole sentence means, "Is it okay if I open the window?" In Japanese, this is like "窓を開けてもいいですか。" Use the base verb after "may". Do not add "to".

Examples

  • May I open the window? 窓を開けてもいいですか。
  • May we leave early today? 今日は早めに帰ってもいいですか。
  • You may sit here. ここに座ってもいいですよ。
  • May I use your phone? あなたの電話を使ってもいいですか。
  • Students may not eat in the library. 学生は図書館で食事をしてはいけません。
  • May I ask a question? 質問してもいいですか。

Common Mistakes

Japanese learners often put "to" after "may" because they expect an infinitive, for example: "May I to use your pen?" -> "May I use your pen?" After a modal verb like "may", use the base verb only.
