Using "be able to"

B1 Eiken 2 Intermediate

be + able to + base verb

Explanation

Use "be able to" to say that someone can do something. We often use it when "can" does not fit the tense.

For example, "I was able to finish the report." Here "I" is the subject, "was" shows past time, "able" means possible, and "to finish" is the action. In Japanese, this is often "〜できた" or "〜することができた." Do not say "I can able to finish the report." Use either "I can finish the report" or "I am able to finish the report."

Examples

  • I am able to swim. 私は泳ぐことができます。
  • She is able to work from home today. 彼女は今日は在宅で働くことができます。
  • Are you able to join us? あなたは私たちに参加できますか。
  • We were able to find the station easily. 私たちは簡単に駅を見つけることができました。
  • I wasn't able to sleep last night. 昨夜は眠ることができませんでした。
  • Will you be able to come tomorrow? 明日来ることができますか。

Common Mistakes

Japanese learners often write "I can able to go." Do not use "can" and "able" together. Say "I can go" or "I am able to go." Another common mistake is missing "to": "I am able go" -> "I am able to go."
