Using "ought to"

A2 Eiken Pre-2 Elementary

subject + ought to + base verb

Explanation

Use "ought to" to give advice or say what is right. It is close to "should", but it sounds a little more formal.

In "You ought to drink more water," "You" is the person, "ought to" gives the advice, and "drink" is the main action. "More water" tells us what to drink. In Japanese, you often say "〜したほうがいい" or "〜すべきだ". After "ought to", use the base verb, not a past form or "-ing" form.

Examples

  • You ought to drink more water. 水をもっと飲んだほうがいいよ。
  • We ought to leave now. もう出発したほうがいいです。
  • Do you think I ought to call him? 彼に電話したほうがいいと思う?
  • You ought not to worry about it. そのことを心配しないほうがいいよ。
  • She ought to see a doctor soon. 彼女は早めに病院に行ったほうがいいです。
  • We ought to check the train times before we go. 行く前に電車の時間を確認したほうがいいです。

Common Mistakes

Japanese learners often forget "to" after "ought".

Wrong: "You ought study more."

Right: "You ought to study more."

Also, after "ought to", keep the verb in the base form.
