説明
Concrete nouns name things you can see, touch, hear, or carry. Abstract nouns name ideas, feelings, or states, so you cannot touch them.
Look at "Love can change a family." Here "Love" is an abstract noun, "can change" shows what it does, and "a family" is a concrete noun phrase. In English, abstract nouns are often singular and do not take "a" or "an". Japanese does not use articles in the same way, so learners may add them by mistake.
具体名詞は、見たり触ったりできるものを表します。抽象名詞は、考え、気持ち、状態を表すので、手で触ることはできません。
例えば "Love can change a family." では、"Love" が抽象名詞で、"can change" がその働きを表し、"a family" は具体的な名詞句です。英語では抽象名詞はたいてい単数で、"a" や "an" をつけないことが多いです。日本語は冠詞を使わないので、そこを入れすぎるミスが起こりやすいです。
例文
- This chair is broken. この椅子は壊れています。
- The children are playing with a ball. 子どもたちがボールで遊んでいます。
- Love can change a family. 愛は家族を変えることがあります。
- Do you need any advice? 何かアドバイスが必要ですか。
- I do not have much patience today. 今日はあまり我慢強くありません。
- We need more information before we decide. 決める前に、もっと情報が必要です。
よくある間違い
Japanese learners often add "a" or a plural "-s" to abstract nouns.
Wrong: "I need a advice."
Right: "I need advice."
Wrong: "She gave me two informations."
Right: "She gave me two pieces of information."
Many abstract nouns like "advice" and "information" are uncountable in English.
日本語話者は、抽象名詞に "a" や複数形の "-s" を付けてしまいがちです。
誤: "I need a advice."
正: "I need advice."
誤: "She gave me two informations."
正: "She gave me two pieces of information."
"advice" や "information" のような抽象名詞は、英語では不可算名詞として使うことが多いです。
