「than」を用いた比較級

A2 英検準2級 初中級

adjective/adverb + -er or more/less + than

説明

Use "than" when you compare two people, things, or places. With short adjectives, you often add "-er", like "faster than" or "bigger than". With longer adjectives, use "more" or "less", like "more interesting than".

For example, "My bag is heavier than yours." Here "My bag" is the thing you compare, "is" is the verb, "heavier" shows the comparison, and "than yours" gives the second thing. Japanese often says "A is bigger than B" with a word like "より", but English needs "than" in the sentence.

例文

  • My bag is heavier than yours. 私のかばんはあなたのより重いです。
  • Tokyo is bigger than Osaka. 東京は大阪より大きいです。
  • This book is more interesting than that one. この本はあれよりもっと面白いです。
  • My brother runs faster than I do. 弟は私より速く走ります。
  • Is your room cleaner than mine? あなたの部屋は私の部屋よりきれいですか。
  • This train is not cheaper than the bus. この電車はバスより安くはありません。

よくある間違い

Japanese learners often say "more cheaper" or forget "than".

Wrong: "This hotel is more cheaper my hotel."

Right: "This hotel is cheaper than my hotel."

Use only "cheaper" or "more expensive", not both together, and always include "than" after the second thing.
