A1 英検3級 初級

be + a/an + singular job or identity noun

説明

Use "a" or "an" when you say what job or role a person has.

In "My father is a doctor," "My father" is the person, "is" is the be verb, "a" shows one person in that role, and "doctor" names the job. We use "an" before a vowel sound, so we say "an engineer," not "a engineer." In English, the article is important; in Japanese, you usually do not need a word like "a" or "an." So Japanese learners often leave it out or choose the wrong one.

例文

  • I am a student. 私は学生です。
  • He is a doctor. 彼は医者です。
  • She is an engineer. 彼女はエンジニアです。
  • Are you a teacher? あなたは先生ですか。
  • My mother is not a nurse. 私の母は看護師ではありません。
  • He is a chef at a small restaurant. 彼は小さなレストランのシェフです。
  • I studied to be an architect in college. 私は大学で建築家になるための勉強をしました。

よくある間違い

Japanese learners often drop the article: "I am teacher." -> "I am a teacher." They also confuse "a" and "an": "She is a engineer." -> "She is an engineer." Remember: use "a" before a consonant sound, and "an" before a vowel sound.
