説明
Use wh- questions with "be" to ask for information about a person, place, thing, or time.
In "What is your name?", "What" asks for the missing information. "Is" is the verb "be". "Your name" comes after the verb, so English changes the order. Japanese learners often say "What your name?" or "Where you from?", but English needs "is" or "are".
wh- 疑問文で "be" を使うと、人・場所・物・時刻などの情報をたずねられます。
例えば "What is your name?" では、"What" が答えを求める語で、"is" が be 動詞です。続く "your name" が知りたい内容で、英語ではこの順番になります。日本語は「お名前は何ですか」のように語順をほとんど変えませんが、英語は wh- 語のあとに be 動詞を置きます。日本語話者は "What your name?" や "Where you from?" としやすいので、"is/are" を忘れないことが大切です。
例文
- What is your name? お名前は何ですか。
- Where are you from? ご出身はどちらですか。
- How are you today? 今日はお元気ですか。
- Who is the man in the blue shirt? 青いシャツの男性はだれですか。
- When is the next train? 次の電車はいつですか。
- Why is the room so quiet? どうして部屋はこんなに静かなのですか。
よくある間違い
Japanese learners often keep Japanese word order and drop "be": "What your name?" or "What your name is?" -> "What is your name?"; "Where you from?" -> "Where are you from?". In English, the wh- word comes first, then "is" or "are".
日本語の語順のままにして、"be" を落としてしまう誤りがよくあります。"What your name?" や "What your name is?" は "What is your name?" に直します。"Where you from?" は "Where are you from?" です。英語では wh- 語のあとに "is" や "are" を置きます。
