連結動詞

A1 英検3級 初級

subject + linking verb + adjective/noun

説明

A linking verb does not show an action. It links the subject to a word that describes it.

For example, in "My sister is happy.", "My sister" is the subject, "is" is the linking verb, and "happy" tells us her state. In English, you need the linking verb, but Japanese often uses "は" and then an adjective or noun, so learners may forget "be".

You can also use this pattern for jobs and places, such as "He is a doctor." and "They are at home."

例文

  • I am tired. 私は疲れています。
  • She is a doctor. 彼女は医者です。
  • They are at home. 彼らは家にいます。
  • Is your father okay? お父さんは大丈夫ですか。
  • We are not ready yet. 私たちはまだ準備できていません。
  • This soup tastes good. このスープはおいしいです。

よくある間違い

Japanese learners often leave out the linking verb.

Wrong: "I tired."

Right: "I am tired."

Wrong: "She doctor."

Right: "She is a doctor."
