choice question with "or"

説明

Use a choice question when you want the other person to pick one of two options. Put "or" between the choices.

For example, "Do you want tea or coffee?" Here "Do you want" makes the question, and "tea or coffee" gives the two choices. The speaker is not asking for a yes or no only. In Japanese, this is like saying "お茶かコーヒー、どちらがいいですか。" English often uses one question form and then the word "or" for the choice.

例文

  • Tea or coffee? お茶にしますか、コーヒーにしますか。
  • Do you want tea or coffee? お茶かコーヒー、どちらがほしいですか。
  • Is this your pen or mine? これはあなたのペンですか、それとも私のですか。
  • Are you free on Saturday or Sunday? 土曜日と日曜日では、どちらが空いていますか。
  • Would you like rice or bread with your meal? 食事にはご飯とパン、どちらがいいですか。
  • Is he at home or at work now? 彼は今、家にいますか、それとも仕事中ですか。

よくある間違い

Japanese learners often mix up the question word and the choice form, like "Which do you want tea or coffee?" That is not natural English. Say "Do you want tea or coffee?" for a choice question, or say "Which do you want, tea or coffee?" only if you are choosing from the two items in a clearer way. Also, do not repeat the full noun if English sounds unnatural; "Tea or coffee?" is often enough in conversation.
