非現実的な現在の状況について、現在形と過去形を用いて「wish」を使う

B2 英検準1級 中上級

wish + past simple / past perfect

説明

Use "wish" when the real situation is not what you want. In "I wish I had more free time," "I" is the speaker, "wish" shows an unreal idea, and "had more free time" is the thing the speaker wants now. The verb "had" looks past, but the meaning is present, so it means "I do not have enough free time now." For a past regret, use past perfect: "I wish I had studied English when I was younger." Japanese often says "もっと自由な時間があればいいのに" or "もっと勉強しておけばよかった," but English shows this unreal meaning with the verb form after "wish".

例文

  • I wish I had more free time. もっと自由な時間があればいいのに。
  • She wishes she lived near the station. 彼女は駅の近くに住んでいればいいのにと思っています。
  • I wish our house was closer to the supermarket. 家がスーパーマーケットにもっと近ければいいのに。
  • I wish I didn't have to work on Sundays. 日曜日に働かなくてよければいいのに。
  • I wish I were taller. もっと背が高ければいいのに。
  • I wish I could remember her name! 彼女の名前を思い出せたらいいのに!

よくある間違い

Japanese learners often use the present tense after "wish": "I wish I can speak English better." Use a past form for a present unreal wish: "I wish I could speak English better."
