A2 英検準2級 初中級

much/far/a lot/slightly + comparative adjective

説明

Use these words before a comparative to show how big the difference is. "Much", "far", and "a lot" make the difference stronger, and "slightly" makes it smaller.

For example, "This room is much bigger than my old one." Here, "This room" is the thing we compare. "is" links the subject to the adjective. "much" adds strength. "bigger" is the comparative form. "than my old one" shows what we compare it with. In Japanese, you often say "ずっと" or "少し" before the adjective idea, but English puts the degree word before the comparative form.

例文

  • This bag is much lighter than that one. このバッグはあのバッグよりずっと軽いです。
  • Today is a lot warmer than yesterday. 今日は昨日よりずっと暖かい。
  • My new laptop is a lot faster than my old one. 私の新しいノートパソコンは古いものよりずっと速いです。
  • The exam was slightly easier than I expected. その試験は思っていたより少し簡単でした。
  • Is your phone much newer than mine? あなたのスマホは私のよりずっと新しいですか。
  • My English is not much better than it was last year. 私の英語は去年よりあまり良くなっていません。
  • My new bike is far better than my old one. 新しい自転車は古い自転車よりずっと良い。

よくある間違い

Japanese learners often say "very bigger" or "more bigger". Use one comparative form only, then add the degree word: "This bag is much bigger than that one." Also, remember "than" after the comparative.
