説明
Use irregular plural nouns when you mean more than one thing, but the noun does not take "-s".
For example, "There are five people in the room." Here "there are" shows that the subject is plural, "five" tells the number, and "people" is the plural form of "person". "In the room" tells us where they are. In Japanese, you can say "部屋に5人います" without changing the noun, but English often changes the noun form. Some nouns change their spelling, and some stay the same, like "sheep" and "fish".
数が2以上のときに、語尾に "-s" を付けない複数名詞を使います。
例えば "There are five people in the room." では、"there are" が「複数がある」ことを示し、"five" が数、"people" が "person" の複数形、"in the room" が場所です。日本語なら「部屋に5人います」と言えて、名詞の形は変わりませんが、英語では名詞の形を変えることがあります。"-s" を付けるだけではなく、"person → people" のように形が変わる語もあり、"sheep" や "fish" のように単数と複数が同じ語もあります。
例文
- I have two children. 私には子どもが2人います。
- There are five people in the room. 部屋には5人います。
- My feet are cold. 私の足は冷たいです。
- Do you have any mice in the house? 家にネズミはいますか。
- We didn't see any sheep today. 今日はヒツジを1匹も見ませんでした。
- Three men are waiting outside. 男性が3人、外で待っています。
よくある間違い
Japanese learners often add "-s" to every plural noun: "two childs" -> "two children" and "three mouses" -> "three mice". Some nouns change form, and some do not change at all, like "one sheep, two sheep". English marks plural number in the noun, but Japanese usually does not.
日本語では複数でも名詞の形が変わらないので、英語でも全部に "-s" を付けてしまうミスがよくあります。たとえば "two childs" は "two children"、"three mouses" は "three mice" です。"sheep" のように、単数も複数も同じ形の名詞もあります。英語は名詞で複数を示しますが、日本語はその点が違います。
