am/is/are + not + verb-ing; Am/Is/Are + subject + verb-ing?

説明

Use the present continuous for something happening now, or around now. For negatives, put "not" after "am", "is", or "are". For questions, put "am", "is", or "are" before the subject.

For example, "Are you watching TV now?" starts with "Are", then the subject "you", then "watching" with "-ing". "Now" shows that this is happening at this moment. Japanese often says "今テレビを見ていますか" without moving the verb, but English must change the word order.

例文

  • I'm not watching TV now. 私は今テレビを見ていません。
  • She isn't working today. 彼女は今日は働いていません。
  • Are you coming with us? 一緒に来ますか。
  • What is he doing at the moment? 彼は今、何をしているのですか。
  • We aren't using the car this week. 私たちは今週、その車を使っていません。
  • Isn't it raining outside? 外、雨が降っていませんか。

よくある間違い

Japanese learners often forget the verb "be" in negatives and questions.

Wrong: "She not working today." / "You coming with us?"

Right: "She isn't working today." / "Are you coming with us?"

In English, the be verb must stay in the sentence, and questions need "am/is/are" before the subject.
