説明
Use a present participle, the "-ing" form of a verb, to describe a noun.
In "The woman sitting by the window is my teacher," "the woman" is the noun, and "sitting by the window" tells us which woman. "Sitting" shows an action in progress, but here it works like a short relative clause, so it means "the woman who is sitting by the window." Japanese often puts this idea before the noun, but English usually puts the "-ing" phrase after the noun. Do not add "who" or "is" before the participle, or the sentence becomes wrong.
動詞の "-ing" 形を使って、名詞を説明します。
例えば "The woman sitting by the window is my teacher." では、"the woman" が名詞で、"sitting by the window" が「どの女性か」を説明しています。"sitting" は「座っている最中」という動きを表しますが、ここでは短い関係節のように働き、"the woman who is sitting by the window" の意味になります。日本語ではこの内容を名詞の前に置くことが多いですが、英語では通常、"-ing" 句を名詞の後ろに置きます。"who" や "is" を余計に入れないようにしましょう。
