action verbs that can take "be + verb-ing"

説明

Dynamic verbs show actions, movement, or change. They often work with "be + verb-ing" when the action is happening now.

For example, "She is cooking dinner now." "She" is the subject, "is cooking" shows the action in progress, "dinner" is the object, and "now" tells us the time. Japanese often says "今〜しています," but English still needs the "-ing" form to show the action is happening. You can also use dynamic verbs for habits, like "I run every morning."

例文

  • I run every morning. 私は毎朝走ります。
  • She is cooking dinner now. 彼女は今、夕食を作っています。
  • They are playing soccer in the park. 彼らは公園でサッカーをしています。
  • Are you watching TV? テレビを見ていますか。
  • He doesn't drive to work. 彼は車で仕事に行きません。
  • The children are building a sandcastle at the beach. 子どもたちは浜辺で砂の城を作っています。

よくある間違い

Japanese learners often write "I go to the station now." when they mean an action in progress. The right form is "I'm going to the station now." because a dynamic verb in progress needs "be + verb-ing."
