was/were + verb-ing

説明

Use the past continuous for an action that was happening at a past time. It often gives the background for another past action.

For example, "When I got home, my mother was cooking dinner." "When I got home" is the finished past event. "My mother was cooking dinner" shows the action in progress at that moment. Japanese often uses "〜ていた" for this meaning, but English must use "was/were + verb-ing."

例文

  • I was reading a book. 私は本を読んでいました。
  • She was cooking dinner at 6 p.m. 彼女は午後6時に夕食を作っていました。
  • They were watching TV when I called. 私が電話したとき、彼らはテレビを見ていました。
  • What were you doing at nine? 9時に何をしていましたか。
  • He wasn't listening in class. 彼は授業中、聞いていませんでした。
  • We were walking home while it was raining. 雨が降っている間、私たちは歩いて帰っていました。

よくある間違い

Japanese learners often use the past simple for an action that was still in progress.

Wrong: "When I got home, my mother cooked dinner."

Right: "When I got home, my mother was cooking dinner."

Also remember that "was/were" must be followed by "verb-ing", not by the past form.
