to + base verb

説明

Use "to + base verb" to say why you do something. It shows the purpose of the action.

For example, "I got up early to catch the train." In this sentence, "I got up early" is the main action, and "to catch the train" tells the reason. The word "to" comes before the verb "catch," and the verb stays in its base form. In Japanese, you often say "〜するために" or "〜しに," but English puts the purpose after "to."

例文

  • I got up early to catch the train. 電車に間に合うために、私は早起きしました。
  • We use this app to practice English. 私たちは英語の練習をするために、このアプリを使います。
  • She went to the shop to buy milk. 彼女は牛乳を買いに店へ行きました。

  • He is saving money to buy a new laptop. 彼は新しいノートパソコンを買うためにお金を貯めています。
