不可算名詞の単位と容器

A2 英検準2級 初中級

a/an or number + unit/container + of + uncountable noun

説明

Use a unit or container word when the noun is uncountable.

For example, "I drank a glass of water." Here "I" is the subject, "drank" is the verb, "a glass of" shows the amount, and "water" is the uncountable noun. "Glass" is a countable word, so you can say "a glass" or "two glasses". "Of" connects the container to the thing inside it. Japanese often says "水をコップ1杯飲みました," but English puts the unit before the noun and uses "of".

例文

  • I drank a glass of water. 私は水をコップ1杯飲みました。
  • She ate a piece of cake. 彼女はケーキを1切れ食べました。
  • We bought two bottles of juice. 私たちはジュースを2本買いました。
  • Can I have a cup of tea? 紅茶を1杯いただけますか。
  • There is a bowl of rice on the table. テーブルの上にご飯が1杯あります。
  • We didn't buy a carton of milk. 私たちは牛乳を1パック買いませんでした。

よくある間違い

Japanese learners often say "a cup tea" or "two waters." English needs "of" after the unit, and the uncountable noun stays singular in this meaning: "a cup of tea" and "two bottles of water." Also, do not say "one rice" for a serving. Say "a bowl of rice" or "a plate of rice."
