Explanation
Use "who" after a noun when you want to say more about a person. The clause with "who" tells us which person you mean.
For example, "The woman who works here is very kind." In this sentence, "The woman" is the main noun. "who works here" tells us which woman. "is very kind" gives the main information about her. Japanese often says this idea before the noun, like "ここで働いている女性". English puts the extra information after the noun.
人について追加の説明をしたいときは、名詞のあとに "who" を置きます。"who" のあとに来る節が、「どの人か」をはっきりさせます。
例えば "The woman who works here is very kind." です。この文では、"The woman" が中心の名詞です。"who works here" が「どの女性か」を説明しています。"is very kind" がその女性についての大事な情報です。日本語では「ここで働いている女性」のように、説明を名詞の前に置くことが多いです。英語はその説明を名詞のあとに置きます。
Examples
- The woman who works here is very kind. ここで働いている女性はとても親切です。
- I have a friend who speaks Japanese. 日本語を話す友達がいます。
- Do you know the boy who sits by the window? 窓のそばに座っている男の子を知っていますか。
- We need someone who can drive. 運転できる人が必要です。
- I don't know anyone who likes cold coffee. 冷たいコーヒーが好きな人は誰も知りません。
- The teacher who taught me English moved to Osaka. 英語を教えてくれた先生は大阪に引っ越しました。
Common Mistakes
Japanese learners often leave out "who" and write "I have a friend speaks Japanese." In English, you need "who" here: "I have a friend who speaks Japanese." Also, use "who" for people, not "which".
日本語では関係する部分をそのまま名詞の前に置けるので、"who" を抜かして "I have a friend speaks Japanese." のように書きがちです。英語では "I have a friend who speaks Japanese." のように "who" が必要です。人を表すときは "which" ではなく "who" を使います。
