Articles with Meals, Languages, and Subjects

A1 Eiken 3 Beginner

no article + meal/language/subject nouns

Explanation

Do not use an article before meal names, language names, and school subject names.

For example, "I had breakfast at 7." Here "I" is the subject, "had" is the past verb, and "breakfast" is the meal name. We do not say "the breakfast" here. The phrase "at 7" tells the time. The same rule works in "She speaks English" and "He studies math." Japanese does not use articles, so the main point is to avoid adding "the" in these common noun phrases.

Examples

  • I had breakfast at 7. 私は7時に朝ごはんを食べました。
  • She speaks English at work. 彼女は仕事で英語を話します。
  • We study math every day. 私たちは毎日数学を勉強します。
  • Do you have lunch at school? 学校で昼ごはんを食べますか。
  • He didn't eat dinner last night. 彼は昨夜夕食を食べませんでした。
  • French is hard for me. フランス語は私には難しいです。

Common Mistakes

Japanese learners often add "the" before these words: "I ate the breakfast." -> "I ate breakfast." "She studies the English." -> "She studies English." "He likes the math." -> "He likes math." In English, these meal, language, and subject words usually stand alone.
