Explanation
Use "but" to show a contrast between two ideas. Use "Next" to move to the next point or step.
For example, "I like coffee, but I don't like tea." Here, "I like coffee" is the first idea, "but" shows the difference, and "I don't like tea" is the second idea. In Japanese, you may say "でも" or use two short sentences, but English often keeps the contrast in one sentence. When you say "Next, we can choose a table," "next" means the next step, not a contrast.
"but" は、2つの考えのちがいを示します。"Next" は、次の話題や手順に進むときに使います。
例えば "I like coffee, but I don't like tea." では、"I like coffee" が最初の考えで、"but" が反対の意味を出し、"I don't like tea" が後ろの考えです。日本語では「でも」や文を2つに分けて言うことが多いですが、英語では1文の中で対比をまとめることがよくあります。"Next, we can choose a table." のように言うと、"next" は対比ではなく「次の段階」を表します。
Examples
- I like apples, but I don't like bananas. 私はりんごは好きですが、バナナは好きではありません。
- He is small, but he is very fast. 彼は小さいですが、とても速いです。
- But why are you sad? でも、どうして悲しいの?
- We don't have time, but we can call her. 時間はありませんが、彼女に電話はできます。
- Next, let's look at the map. 次に、地図を見ましょう。
- We finished dinner. Next, we washed the dishes. 夕食を食べ終えました。次に、皿を洗いました。
Common Mistakes
Japanese learners often join opposite ideas with "and" or with two separate sentences.
Wrong: "I like coffee and I don't like tea."
Right: "I like coffee, but I don't like tea."
Another mistake is using "next" to mean contrast.
Wrong: "Next, I don't like tea."
Right: "But I don't like tea."
日本語の感覚で、反対の内容を "and" でつないだり、別々の文にしたりしがちです。
誤り: "I like coffee and I don't like tea."
正しくは: "I like coffee, but I don't like tea."
もう1つの誤りは、対比したいのに "next" を使うことです。
誤り: "Next, I don't like tea."
正しくは: "But I don't like tea."
