Explanation
Use the present perfect to talk about a life experience. You do not say when it happened.
For example, "I have been to Kyoto." Here, "have been" shows an experience, and "Kyoto" is the place. The sentence tells us that this experience is part of my life now, but it does not give a time. In Japanese, we often say "京都に行ったことがあります". English shows this idea with "have/has + past participle," not with a separate word for "experience".
ライフ経験を言うときは現在完了を使います。いつ起きたかは言いません。
たとえば "I have been to Kyoto." では、"have been" が「行ったことがある」という経験を表し、"Kyoto" は場所です。この文は、その経験が今の私の人生の中にあることを伝えますが、時期は示しません。日本語では「京都に行ったことがあります」と言います。英語では「have/has + 過去分詞」でこの意味を表します。
Examples
- I have been to Kyoto. 私は京都に行ったことがあります。
- She has never tried sushi. 彼女は寿司を食べたことがありません。
- Have you ever lived abroad? 海外に住んだことがありますか。
- We have seen that movie before. 私たちはその映画を前に見たことがあります。
- My brother has visited Hokkaido three times. 私の兄は北海道に3回行ったことがあります。
- They haven't flown on a plane yet. 彼らはまだ飛行機に乗ったことがありません。
Common Mistakes
Japanese learners often use the past simple for life experience, like "I went to Kyoto before." In English, use the present perfect: "I have been to Kyoto before." Also, do not add a finished time word like "last year" with this structure.
日本語の「〜たことがある」をそのまま過去形にして、"I went to Kyoto before." のように言いがちです。英語では "I have been to Kyoto before." のように現在完了を使います。また、この形には "last year" のような終わった時を一緒に入れません。
