Using "good" & "well"

A1 Eiken 3 Beginner

be + good; verb + well

Explanation

Use "good" for a person, thing, or state. Use "well" for the way an action happens, or for health.

For example, "She sings well." Here "She" is the subject, "sings" is the action, and "well" tells us how she sings. In Japanese, you may just say "歌が上手です," but English needs "well" after the verb. For a description, say "She is a good teacher." Here "is" links the subject to the description "a good teacher."

Examples

  • This soup is good. このスープはおいしいです。
  • She is a good friend. 彼女はいい友達です。
  • He speaks English well. 彼は英語を上手に話します。
  • Do you sleep well? よく眠れますか。
  • I do not feel well today. 今日は気分がよくありません。
  • He is good at football, and he plays well in matches. 彼はサッカーが得意で、試合でもうまくプレーします。

Common Mistakes

Japanese learners often say "I speak English good." The correct form is "I speak English well." After a verb, use the adverb "well." If you want to say skill, you can also say "I am good at English."
